Dixie Flyers
HYRUM, Utah -- Miscues on the special teams spelled doom for the
Flyers in their upset bid of Mountain Crest Friday afternoon.

Dixie missed a pair of extra points (one a kick, the other a two-point
try), had a bad snap on a punt and had another punt blocked. The end
result was a two-point loss to the Mustangs in the state 4A
quarterfinals.

The Flyers gave it their all, closing a nine point gap in the final two
minutes to just two points on a long TD pass from Mike Sharp to Ian
Gatchell. The fourth-down score gave Dixie hope, but the onside kick
was handled by MC and the Mustangs ran out the clock.

Sharp passed for 310 yards and should be an all-region pick going into
his senior season next year.

Dalton Smith, another underclassman, caught six passes for 121 yards
and Gatchell and Jake Mills both caught four passes in the
heartbreaking loss.

Dixie trailed throughout, but never by more than nine points. The
Flyers had the ball in the third quarter with a chance for the lead as the
they trailed just 21-19.

But Mt. Crest dropped Sharp for a big loss on second down and a third
down pass fell incomplete, forcing a Dixie punt. Two plays later, the
Mustangs executed a perfect halfback pass from Chandler Smith to
Ethen Lofthouse for a 65-yard score that pushed the lead back out to
two scores.

The Flyers really struggled running the ball in the game and ended up
with just 26 yards as a team.
